TUSCALOOSA | Each day that passes means Tuscaloosa County is closer to becoming a rubble-free zone.

Now, Gov. Robert Bentley is trying to ensure that level of progress continues, with the lowest cost to local residents.

On Friday, Bentley made an official request for a 60-day extension on Operation Clean Sweep, the first-time program that allows the federal government to cover 90 percent of the costs associated with debris removal.

The operation is currently set to expire statewide on July 12, but in Tuscaloosa, it is slated to end earlier — on July 8.

City attorneys said that the Clean Sweep timeline began on the day work officially began under the U.S. Corps of Engineers to remove debris within a certain jurisdiction.

If approved, the city’s new deadline would be Sept. 7, and state Emergency Management Agency officials have predicted the cleanup efforts on public and private property in the hardest-hit areas could continue at least until then.

“While great progress has been made to clean up the debris from the April tornado outbreak, there is still much work left to be done,” Bentley said in a news release. “That is why I am requesting that Operation Clean Sweep be extended for an additional 60 days.”

Without the extension, the federal government’s share of the cost to clean up debris would fall to 75 percent, with the city and state splitting the remaining 25 percent.

Removing so much debris and rubble does not come cheap.

So far, city officials estimate that the cost to remove the debris within the city of Tuscaloosa alone has come to about $24.34 million.
